Institutional Review Board
All institutions that conduct or support biomedical research involving people have an Institutional Review Board (IRB) that reviews and approves every new study before it can begin, as well as periodically thereafter. The Rockefeller University Hospital IRB is an independent committee of physicians, biostatisticians, nurses, social workers, and members of the community whose role includes ensuring that a study is well designed and ethical, that the risks of the study are as low as possible, and monitoring the side-effects of drugs or treatments. The IRB also reviews the research and consent forms to ensure that the rights and welfare of study participants are protected and that patient confidentiality is maintained.
